Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands today signed over her throne to her eldest son Willem Alexander as thousands filled the streets of Amsterdam to welcome their first king in more than 100 years. The 46 year old held his mother's hand after putting their signatures on the abdication document at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.
    The 75 year old looked close to tears as she then appeared on a balcony looking at about 20,000 citizens in the monarchy.

I am happy and grateful to introduce to you your new king, Willem Alexander, she told the cheering crowd.

Moments later, the new King said

Dear mother, today you relinquished the throne. 33 years moving and inspiring years. We are intensely, intensely grateful to you.

Afterwards, in a symbol of the generational shift she left the balcony and the new king and his family waved the crowd. Willem Alexander's wife becomes Queen Maxima and their eldest daughter Catharina Amalia becomes Princess Orange and first in line to the throne. The 46 year old who is a water management specialist is expected to bring a less formal touch to the monarchy together with his wife, a former investment banker from Argentina and has pledged to be a 21st century king.
     

Britain's Prince Charles and Japan's Crown Princess Masako, who is making her first foreign trip since falling ill a decade ago were also in attendance and will be among 2,000 visitors at the official investiture ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.
The royal family will head from the palace to the 600 year old Nieuwe Kerk or New Church next door in the afternoon where the king will swear an oath to uphold the Dutch constitution before lawmakers.

The family of the late Big Brother Africa housemate in a statement earlier today said they are ready to auction all her remaining items tomorrow.
   

The statement signed by the family representative, Deji Adetayo, stated that the singer did not leave a will but she had had an agreement with her husband, Leonard Harvey to auction her belongings. The proceeds from the sales would be donated to charity as agreed by the late singer before she died.
He stated,

There will be a garage sale at Goldie’s house located at 30B, Ologunkutere Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos on May 1, 2013.

Iraqi government suspends the operating licenses of Al-Jazeera and nine Iraqi TV channels

Iraqi government on Sunday suspended the operating licenses of Al-Jazeera and nine Iraqi TV channels after accusing them of escalating sectarian tension. The suspensions which took effect immediately, appeared to target mainly Sunni channels known for criticizing Prime Minister Nouri al-Malik’s government.

Although the decision will not banish the channels from the airwaves because satellite channels based abroad are beyond the reach of the Iraqi government but journalists within Iraq are prohibited from reporting. The government’s action comes as Baghdad tries to subdue rising unrest in the country that erupted last week after Iraqi security forces launched a deadly crackdown on a Sunni protest site in the central city of Hawija, killing 23 people, including three soldiers. More than 180 people have been killed in gunbattles with security forces and other attacks.
     The letter that was delivered by the media commission to the channels stated that Iraqi security force has ordered them to do what’s necessary to stop all journalism operations. Mr. Barazanji, of Baghdad TV, said he took that as an implicit threat that his reporters would be arrested if they continued to do their jobs. The commission also ordered local cellphone companies to shut off any phone numbers registered to Baghdad TV.
 

In its statement, the media commission said the networks had broadcast misinformation, hype and exaggeration that had deepened sectarian divisions in Iraq. The other nine channels whose licenses were suspended by the Iraqi media commission are al-Sharqiya, al-Sharqiya News, Salahuddin, Fallujah, Taghyeer, Baghdad, Babiliya, Anwar 2 and al-Gharbiya

Taylor Swift Pays Cash As she Acquires $17 Million Mansion

The American singer and songwriter paid for the mansion in cash, wiring the money over to purchase the place immediately. Taylor was reportedly looking at the $17 million mansion in Rhode Island for a few weeks, but appears to have spent some time negotiating the price. The 11,000 square foot estate was originally listed for $20 million, but Swift ended up paying $17.75 million.

PDP is having a merger with INEC - ACN

The publicity secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Lagos State, Mr Joe Igbokwe stated in an interview with Punch newspapers that they feel INEC is having a merger plan with PDP.
He said,

We cannot expect INEC to be impartial in a setting where its funded by the Federal Government. We must all work to help INEC succeed to avoid the type of rigging that occured in 1999.

Judge Orders Police Officers To Return Seized Marijuana To Owner

Tacoma Police has been told to return the marijuana siezed from Joseph Robertson during a traffic stop and if the officers refuse to follow the directive within seven days, they will be charged with contempt. Contempt of court means the violator has behaved in a disorderly way toward the judge and is accused of interrupting the due course of a trial or judicial proceeding. Contempt can be punishable with a fine and jail time.
     

Judge Jack Emery sent an order to the police on Thursday, demanding they return seized drugs to their rightful owner immediately or else face a criminal contempt charge. Emery reinforced the judgment to assistant city attorney John Walker, telling him to appeal or comply else the officers involved will face him in court and they would require legal representation.
   

Emery first ordered police to return the marijuana on February 28, but they refused. In May 2012, an officer pulled over Robertson for speeding and cited him for driving without a license and misdemeanor marijuana possession. The motorist had three small bags of weed, the equivalent of 40 grams (1.4 ounces). Prosecutors later dismissed the drug charge in December after state voters decided to legalize small amounts marijuana for personal use. Robertson asked for his pot back, providing a medical marijuana permit as he is a designated provider of the substance for a patient and legally allowed to carry limited amounts of weed (less than 680 grams or 24 ounces).

FG bans Governor Rotimi Ameachi's Bombardier -BD700 aircraft

The Federal Government on Friday through the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority temporarily banned the official plane of the Rivers State governor. The aircraft with registration number N565RS was grounded in Akure, Ondo state because the pilot couldn't provide the manifest and certain mandatory requirements of the plane.

The governor who was back on his way from the burial of the Ekiti state deputy governor was stranded for about 2hours with the speaker of the house of representatives, Aminu Tambuwal. Sources say it took the intervention of the speaker before the aircraft was allowed to take-off.

US government to halt HIV vaccine study, Due to failure

The “HVTN 505 clinical trial” kicked off in 2009 and had about 2,500 people enrolled in 19 cities. It consisted of male participants who have sex with men, as well as transgender people who have sex with men. Half of the participants received an experimental vaccine developed by the National Institutes of Health, while the others received placebo shots.
    

The HIV vaccine trial had a safety review on April 22, which found that more volunteers who received the vaccine became infected with HIV than with the placebo. The safety review also found that the vaccine was not able to reduce the amount of HIV virus in the blood of people who had already been diagnosed with the disease. They were tracked for about 20 weeks.
The NIH released a statement on Thursday saying 

the HIV vaccine study failed. While they will not give more vaccines, they will continue to study the health of the volunteers. The agency said

 Multiple attempts at creating an AIDS and HIV vaccine have been made over the years. So far, all attempts have failed. Despite the lack of complete success, researchers try to continue the fight for a cure or prevention method for the deadly disease.

Swedish Police Raid Justin Bieber's Tour Bus, Finds Drugs And Stun Gun

The 19 year old who is currently being investigated by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department over ongoing battery allegations was hit with another controvery  on April 24. Police spokesman Lars Byström confirmed that officers were suspicious about a strong smell of marijuana coming from Bieber’s tour bus while it was parked in front of the city’s Grand Hotel. Byström said the drug squad were alerted after the tour party left for the Arena and a search of the empty bus took place at the Ericsson Globe Arena about 30 minutes before Bieber took to the stage.
 

The officer stressed that they have no suspects as the bus was empty and that no one has been arrested, However he confirmed that a small amount of narcotics had been confiscated and that a stun gun requiring a permit was also found on the bus. Regardless, Officers provided additional security for the Bieber as he exited the hotel to travel to each of his three concerts at Stockhom’s Ericsson Globe Arena.
     The teen star who played his final show on Wednesday did an impromptu dance show for screaming fans waiting outside the hotel as he left the hotel to get on the tour bus.

 We don’t have any concrete suspicions against any specific person. About 10 passengers were on the tour bus, including Bieber. The crew left with the bus but the investigation is still going on. It was a small stun gun and in this country you need a permit to carry one or have one and they hadn’t, Police spokesman revealed.

Twenty million people hit with serious food shortages in Mauritania

Millions of people in the north African Sahel region are experiencing serious food shortages, aid workers said Wednesday.

The crisis has engulfed 4.3 million Malians, including those displaced after Islamist militants took over northern Mali last year.

Meanwhile, More than 850,000 children are receiving lifesaving treatment. The largest humanitarian effort of its kind ever in the Sahel region.

In an attempt to discourage his daughters Malia and Sasha from getting tattoos, the president said that he would get the same tattoo that they do to make if a family tattoo. President Obama, who appeared on Today this morning, said:

    What we’ve said to the girls is, If you guys ever decided you’re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and i will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo. And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that’s a good way to rebel.

Catholic Priest accused of Child pornography possession

A Roman Catholic priest from St. Louis has been indicted on federal child pornography charges.
       Federal prosecutors on Wednesday announced the indictment of 36-year-old William F. Vatterott. Authorities alleged that Vatterott possessed at least two images of an unidentified underage nude male on his computer. Vatterott has served at churches in Ballwin and St. Cecilia Parish in the city of St. Louis. He was placed on administrative leave in 2011 after a complaint was filed with Ballwin police.
    The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Vatterott was also accused of involvement in underage drinking and other inappropriate behaviors. Although no physical contact was reported, Father Vatterott was accused of participating in illicit electronic correspondence with the teenagers. If he’s found guilty, the pornography charge could land the indicted Catholic priest behind bars for up to 10 years. He could also be slapped with a hefty fine upwards of $250,000.

Most Violent Cities to take note of In The World

For the second year in a row, San Pedro Sula, Honduras holds on to the infamous top spot as the most violent city in the world, with 169 homicides per 100,000 habitants. And much to the chagrin of the region, all 10 of the globe's most violent destinations remain in Latin America.

Just five countries in the list comprise the top 10: Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico and Venezuela. Brazil had 15 cities rank in the top 50, the most of any country.

     This study was published by the Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice (Consejo Ciudadano para la Seguridad Pública y la Justicia Penal), a private organization and part of the Mexican Employers' Association. The organization bases its ranking off of official homicide statistics provided by local governments.
    The first U.S. city to appear on the list is New Orleans, ranking at No. 17. Other American cities in the top 50 included Detroit at No. 21; St. Louis at No. 40; Baltimore at No. 41; and Oakland, Calif. at No. 43. While discussing the report, the Citizen Council's president argued that gun restriction laws won't do much to curb violence in large cities, echoing the sentiments of those who oppose gun control efforts in the U.S.

Prohibitions on gun ownership do not affect violent criminals who ultimately have a way of getting their hands on weapons, They only disarm innocent people and leave them at the mercy of criminals.
