According to sources, the
37 years old mother of six is planning to undergo surgery to remove her ovaries. Her decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy is to avoid ovarian cancer that killed her mother at the age of 56.
Jolie revealed she had a 50 percent chance of one day developing ovarian cancer which is a very high risk. Preventive double mastectomies are procedure that most women who may carry the BRCA1 gene cannot access. Jolie plans to prevent cancer by removing her ovaries, even though there is a risk of developing breast cancer at some point in her life.
Some doctors recommend patients undergo the surgery by age 40 or when a woman is done having children, though it may trigger early menopause. Jolie’s decision to remove her ovaries along with her breasts is a wise one and unusual one medically.
